Undergraduate

The University of Calgary Medical school is a three year program, with 180 students in each year.  The gastroenterology and hematology integrated course is the first course in the curriculum:

Course 1 “Blood and Guts” Description

Integrated Clinical Presentations related to the Blood and Gastro-Intestinal systems is the first pre-clerkship course for undergraduate medical students at the University of Calgary. As this is the first course for students, general principles of medicine as a whole will be presented, including concepts of history and physical examination taking, as well as principles of investigations such as test sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value. Additionally, general introductory concepts are presented including anatomy, pathology, physiology, radiology and genetics. Students will learn how to diagnose, investigate and manage patients presenting with such clinical presentations including but not limited to fever, anemia, bruising and bleeding, weight loss, difficulty swallowing, abdominal pain, jaundice and diarrhea.

During the 2014 course delivery, the flip classroom model of content delivery will be provided to learners during the Hepatology week of the course. The flip classroom part of the course will involve basic knowledge constructs provided in mandatory podcasts followed by interactive sessions to reinforce concepts and enhance knowledge application.
