Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy

“To be a world-class clinical research and academic training program in advanced therapeutic endoscopy within the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Calgary focused on providing effective and efficient endoscopy-related care to patients.”

Significant technological advancements have resulted in a rapid expansion of the field of “Therapeutic Endoscopy”. As a tertiary referral Centre for Southern Alberta and a number of locations in neighboring British Columbia, the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Calgary is proud to offer specialized endoscopic care across a wide platform for our patients. The bulk of our clinical service is centralized at the Peter Lougheed Centre.

Dr. Jonathan Love (Medical Director of Endoscopy)
Dr. Steven Heitman (Training Program Director)
Dr. Sydney Bass
Dr. Martin Cole
Dr. Rachid Mohamed
Dr. Paul Belletrutti

Clinical services provided:

  • endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
  • endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)
  • luminal stenting
  • capsule endoscopy
  • deep enteroscopy (DBE)
  • endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and difficult polypectomy
  • radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for treatment of Barrett’s

Our group is engaged in a number of clinical research projects. In addition to leading and participating in a number of clinical trials, we are capitalizing on existing administrative data infrastructure to bolster research output and establish a culture of academic productivity in therapeutic endoscopy.

Active studies:

  1. Evaluating the need for a follow-up ERCP in the management of post-cholecystectomy biliary leaks
  2. Evaluating time trends and predictors of mortality in cholangitis and pancreatitis using the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) in the United States
  3. Evaluating EUS utilization, disparities of EUS service provision and complications of EUS in Alberta and Ontario
  4. Evaluating the use of optical enhancement for identifying colorectal neoplasia: A randomized controlled trial (RCT) of optical enhancement (i-scan) compared to standard high definition optical colonoscopy for detecting adenomas in patients at increased risk of colorectal cancer
  5. Evaluating the utility of capsule endoscopy in obscure GI bleeding: RCTs of capsule endoscopy compared to traditional diagnostic modalities in patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding
  6. Evaluating clinical outcomes following double balloon endoscopy
  7. Calgary is a recruitment site for a multicenter RCT comparing fully covered metal and plastic biliary stents for benign biliary strictures.

Our Missions is to train academically oriented therapeutic endoscopists. As such, it is a mandatory requirement that all trainees engage in research and complete a research project alongside their clinical program. We offer a diverse clinical training experience in ERCP, EUS, and luminal therapeutics including EMR and difficult polypectomy, enteral stenting and deep enteroscopy. This is possible given the highly centralized nature of our clinical service provision.

Given the demanding nature of our program, we prioritize candidates who wish to complete two years of training. Candidates are encouraged to apply for Clinical Fellowship Awards (Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology) and suitable applicants should contact Dr. Steve Heitman ( well in advance (at least 3 months) of the application deadline to discuss funding opportunities. However, we provide full funding through our partnership with Pentax Canada which will be awarded to the most competitive applicant each year according to the criteria mentioned above and detailed below. The Pentax Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy Fellowship Award will supplement the funding of a candidate who has won an external clinical fellowship award.
