Welcome to the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Referral portal. The aim of this site is guide you in the referral process to gastroenterology or hepatology.
Referrals to GI in the Calgary Zone may be targeted one of three ways:
1) CENTRAL ACCESS & TRIAGE (CAT) – we receive 1800-2000 referrals per month for luminal GI, while hepatology receives 200-300 per month. There are a total of 37 physicians (including liver doctors) who see patients from CAT and our first priority is to ensure the sickest patients are seen first. Triage or priority sequence is assigned based on established Canadian guidelines, as well as the recent Alberta Gastroenterology Provincial Referral Guideline.
All hepatology referrals must occur through CAT.
2) Private physicians – the remaining general GI physicians (11 private physicians outside of CAT) – are based out of either the PLC or RGH. These physicians have their own independent fax machines and their acceptance of referrals is largely based on individual wait times.
3) Colon cancer screening – specific requests for colo-rectal cancer screening within eligible age range (50-75yrs) can be made to the Forzani-McPhail Colon Cancer Screening Center.
